How to audition
Video Audition Instructions
You need to wear the choir dress code (click this link: choir dress code ) in your video audition. Film your shoes, in closeup, at the beginning of the video.
Please introduce yourself on the video, before you begin singing.
While you film your audition, please make sure that you are not looking at lyrics (if lyrics are part of the audition) on your computer screen, glancing at them nearby, or using any cues whatsoever. It is crucial that the song is solidly memorized, and as soon as possible. Sing directly to the camera, communicating the song to the viewer.
Before you send your video, check to see/hear if there is any room for improvement. Remember that there are many others auditioning, so if there are mistakes that you know you can fix- decide if you’d like to film one more option. If there are lyrics in the audition song, you might also want to try muting the sound and then watching your performance…can you still tell that you are singing a great piece of music? Or do you look bored? Will the audience connect with your performance?
DEADLINE
The Deadline for the next video submission is 10:00 pm on Tuesday, 8 Nov. Please send your video using the specific “How To Submit” instructions on this page. If you send your video via dropbox or WhatsApp, it will not be seen.
SUBMIT YOUR VIDEO
Please make sure to follow the instructions, below… step-by-step ⬇️
How to Submit
Please use WeTransfer.com to send your videos. That way, you will automatically be notified via email (by WeTransfer) when your video arrives in our inbox, and again as soon as someone has downloaded/viewed it. I won't be able to confirm receipt of every audition as it comes in, or again once I view it… so using WeTransfer will give you some reassurance that your audition has arrived safely! WeTransfer is also able to transfer huge files, unlike regular email. You don't need to register or pay for anything.
IMPORTANT: As mentioned, WeTransfer will send you immediate confirmation that your video has arrived safely (and again as soon as I download your video)- but only if you insert the correct choir email address, and your own email address, while uploading your files on the WeTransfer site (as per the instructions, below)
—————-
* Simply go to: https://www.wetransfer.com
* On the next screen, you will see a box - inside which you will be asked to do 4 things:
1. + Add your files (this is where you upload your video)
2. Type YOUR email address (otherwise WeTransfer won't be able to send you a notification when I've downloaded your audition)
3. Type MY email address, and/or Louise’s email address:
rachel@capitalchoir.com or info@capitalchoir.com
4. Press “Transfer”
—————-
*If you notice your upload is taking an outrageous amount of time, try refreshing the page or just starting the process again after a minute. The site occasionally gets bursts of heavy traffic.
*If there is a problem sending the file…double-check that there are no typos in the email address.
*If given the option -please do not make or send a “board”.
*WeTransfer always sends a third email, approximately a week later - to warn you that your video is about to expire. This does not mean it was not downloaded! It just means the link is about to expire. You will only need to get in touch if you receive no notifications at all from WeTransfer.
**If you have a cold or sore throat...don't worry about how you think your voice sounds, or about not being able to hit the high notes!! If you are especially worried about it, then let me know so that I can help…
Good luck everyone!
All the best,
Rachel
Dress Code For Gigs
Gigs/Performances can sometimes occur on short notice, with very little time to prepare. If you are interested in auditioning for gigs during the year, it is vital that you source each item of the dress code as soon as possible- rather than risk leaving it until an unexpected performance opportunity that comes along. I have attached some photos of the correct dress code, along with suggestions on where you can find everything. Each chorister needs to look identical, so please make sure that you have the correct items and not something that you might feel is "close enough". The appearance of the choir is usually very important to event organizers, and the wrong dress code can be the difference between taking part at a gig, or not. If you are struggling to pay for the full or correct dress code, please contact Rachel so that she can find a solution: there may be a chorister who has an extra pair of shoes, or top. I have attached a couple of photos to this page as a reference.
TOP: solid black, long-sleeved, crew- neck t-shirt. Please make sure the sleeves come down close to your wrists, that there is no detailing at all on the shirt - no logos, coloured stitching, etc. and that it's solid black. The neck must be a simple crew-neck. The top can be found online, on numerous sites. Here is a recent link that might be useful: amazon.co.uk
BOTTOM: solid black skinny jeans. No fading -otherwise please re-dye them to make sure they are black. Make sure that the jeans appear a solid black colour underneath bright lights, or in daylight….and not navy blue. The jeans should be skinny jeans with a snug, adherent fit; They shouldn't be baggy/loose or leggings/jeggings. Most parents have found the black skinny jeans at Primark, H&M, Next, or The Gap.
SOCKS: long, solid black socks. Not ankle socks. The socks should be worn under the skinny jeans, so that no flesh is seen.
SHOES (Girls): Girls: plain black, leather (matte, not patent) ballet flats. No straps, buckles, large bows, sparkles, embroidery, or quilting. The shoes need to look identical to these: marksandspencer.com and can also be found at a number of other high street shops, including HERE and HERE. Or another, slightly cheaper option, HERE. If the above shops are out of stock, please contact info@capitalchoir.com for further suggestions.
SHOES (Boys): plain, solid black, slip-on plimsolls. In the past, the boys were able to wear black school shoes or any black shoes...however, this sometimes led to some boys wearing trainers while others wore black boots and others wear formal black shoes. The feedback at one of our gigs was that the boys needed to be uniform, just like the girls. We think the best and cheapest solution is for boys to wear solid black, slip-on plimsolls. Plimsolls can be found at a number of shops, and cost between £2-£7. They can be found in the same section of the M&S shop and should look like these: marksandspencer.com
I have attached a photo of a chorister wearing the top and jeans, and their shoes, for reference. You can also find photos of the choir wearing the dress code on our website, in various photos.
Lyrics
"All You Need Is Love"
Love, love, love
Love, love, love
Love, love, love
There's nothing you can do that can't be done
Nothing you can sing that can't be sung
Nothing you can say but you can learn how to play the game
It's easy
Nothing you can make that can't be made
No one you can save that can't be saved
Nothing you can do but you can learn how to be you in time
It's easy
All you need is love
All you need is love
All you need is love, love
Love is all you need
Love, love, love
Love, love, love
Love, love, love
All you need is love
All you need is love
All you need is love, love
Love is all you need
Nothing you can know that isn't known
Nothing you can see that isn't shown
Nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be
It's easy
All you need is love
All you need is love
All you need is love, love
Love is all you need
All you need is love (All together, now!)
All you need is love (Everybody!)
All you need is love, love
Love is all you need
VIVA LA VIDA LYRICS
Ooh.... Ooh...
I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own
Ooh... Ooh...
I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing
"Now the old king is dead! Long live the king!"
One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand
I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
Once youʼd gone there was never
Never an honest word
And that was when I ruled the world
([soloists): Aah...aah Aah...aah ]
(Choir): It was the wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn't believe what I'd become
Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh who would ever want to be king?
I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter won't call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world
[soloists: Aah...aah Aah...aah Aah...aah Aah...aah]
(Choir): Ooh.... Ooh... Ooh... (3 x)
